Zinedine Zidane's headbutt

French talisman Zidane is known for losing his cool when provoked, but the Frenchman chose the worst match to do so. 2006's World Cup final saw Italy take on France, and Les Bleus drew the first blood after Zidane coolly converted from the penalty spot. The trouble began midway through the match when Materazzi started ushering phallic words in the direction of Zidane. Zidane asked him to stay away, but as per reports Materazzi insulted Zidane's mother and wife which led to the decisive moment in the game. Zidane was rightly sent off for his antics.

Ironically, Materazzi popped up with a goal earlier to take the game into extra time and France bowed out in penalty shootout. Zidane's reaction sparked various reactions, where many supported his moment of madness and few insisted that this cost France and Zidane their second World Cup.

Patrick Battiston battered and bruised

The 1982 semifinal match in Seville, between France and West Germany, saw one of the worst challenges in football history and bizarre refereeing sparked a tremendous backlash. Harald Schumacher, West German stopper took out Patrick Battiston of France in the worst possible fashion.

Patrick who was through on goal looked to seal the tie, but Harald was so adamant in taking him out that he was miles away from the ball and knocked Patrick out with his body. Patrick had to be stretched off unconscious and to everyone's surprise, the referee awarded Germany a goal kick.

Nigel de Jong's moment of Kung Fu Panda

The Dutch defender chose a wrong time to show the World his prowess in Karate. 2010's World Cup final saw two of the best teams in the tournament Netherlands and Spain battle for glory. The game was nicely poised until a long ball in the direction of Xabi Alonso was cleared out. However, it was not the ball but Alonso who was taken out. Nigel de Jong with no intention of winning the ball cleanly karate kicked Alonso. This caused a massive uproar and Spanish players and officials were rightly adamant on sending de Jong off.

The referee chose to heighten the already fuming Spain, by showing a yellow card for such a rash challenge. Everyone looked baffled even few of the Dutch players who thought they had to play the rest of the match a man down. This did not go down well, and poetic justice was made when Spain prevailed as the worthy winners.
