3 Star Midfielders who never made through to the FIFA World Cup

Time and again we have seen how cruel footballing Gods can be. Players who have the potential to dazzle and sizzle the grandest stage of all try hard only to bow out in the qualifiers. Today we look at three such midfielders who never made it to the most coveted tournament in the World.

Ryan Giggs (Wales)

One of the best left central midfielders ever to grace the game, Giggs was a near perfect midfielder. A tenacious and quite player who could dictate the pace of the game is a Manchester United legend. Giggs was able to be deployed at left back due to his pace and defensive abilities, although later on his career he played further up the field.

Giggs was offered to play for England after his teammates Paul Scholes and David Beckham publicly admitted that they want Giggs to don the England shirt. However, Giggs would never stop playing for Wales even if it meant no World Cup appearance.

Sadly there was none and Giggs's only major tournament was the 2012 Summer Olympics where he represented Great Britain. The midfield maestro never had the chance to showcase his abilities for his nation.

Liam Brady (Ireland)

An outstanding Irish playmaker, Liam Brady seemed to have ample time on the ball despite his stocky build. He played for Arsenal where he secured an FA Cup before moving to Juventus with whom he won two Seria A medals.

Liam had an impeccable passing range and vision to pick out his teammates. He could play behind the striker or as a central midfielder. He had a knack for long diagonal balls when playing as a central midfielder or he could thread in a perfect through ball when playing in his natural number 10 position.

However, Brady did not have much success with his national team. He retired midway through the 1990 World Cup qualifiers but expressed his desire to represent his country only to be snubbed by then manager Jack Charlton who wanted to field a young team.

Jari Litmanen (Finland)

Finland's best player ever to wear footballing boots, Jari Litmanen was a talented attacking midfielder who was often deployed as a second striker. Jari won the Champions League with Ajax, and played on another level during his time with the Dutch club. He could make or score goals with ridiculous ease and later in his career settled for a deeper role.

His career was blighted by recurrent injuries forcing him to be on the benches of Barcelona and Liverpool. For Finland, Jari made 132 appearances scoring 37 times. He is by far the greatest Finnish player ever. In a career that spanned over two decades, Litmanen never played in a major tournament. To be fair, Finland has never managed to qualify for any major tournament ever.

Litmanen was a fine exponent of short spaces and could shoot from range. He managed to score in his last international appearance and brought down curtains to an impressive international career.
